Polysaccharides are linear or branched monosaccharides with more than ten residues linked by glycosidic bonds.
Based on the combination of monosaccharides, there are two types of polysaccharides: those with chemically identical monosaccharides, called homo-polysaccharides, and those with non-identical monosaccharides connections called hetero-polysaccharides.
Main functions of polysaccharides in organisms:
- Substituent carriers (acetate, pyruvate, succinate, etc.).
- Structure of cellulose, pectin, and chitin
- Energy storage (glycogen and starch)
However, some polysaccharides, especially glycosaminoglycans, are known to have other important functions, such as in wound healing, neurophysiology, cognition, and behavior.
